Studio Inquiry

This studio will explore how designers engage with First Nations peoples and knowledges. You will be engaging with First Nations peoples and their knowledges. You will design an Acknowledgement of Country - which many design agencies and corporate clients have, expect to see and continually update. Your Acknowledgement of Country, as a folio piece, is a statement of your intention to design with respect to the sovereignty of First Nations peoples. You will explore local First Nations sites of cultural significance and respond through image, text and art direction. You will learn about media forms such as narrative based design, digital communications and print.

Engagement

You will engage with current design discourse on Design with Indigenous / First Nations peoples and knowledges and sustainability in design and communication. You will also explore a range of conceptual development prompts in order to expand your understanding of ideas generation and working through 'creative blocks'.

Communication of knowledge

You will learn about the diversity of First Nations peoples and their knowledges. You will learn how to place yourself respectfully, as both an individual and as a designer, alongside First Nations knowledges. Based on your research findings you will propose and generate effective, exciting ideas that reflect your design ethics and your intention to work with respect to First Nations peoples. You will art direct and design communications / (digital / print) that tells both a personal story and sets a clear intention of how you will practice design with respect to First Nations cultures.

Activities

You will explore local sites of cultural significance for First Nations peoples (Woi wurrung / Boon Wurrung), and meet with Indigenous artists. You will also research and share examples of effective design and communication interventions. You will present your strategy and design to both Indigenous and non-Indigenous designers who have done similar work.
